We have recently received stock of the new Fuji 100-400mm lens, so we thought we'd get it out and have a quick look see what all the fuss is about.
Yes, it is a 100-400mm zoom lens, and you can never expect it to be small. The size is similar to the Canon equivalent, the "Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM".
(See image below)
Is that a bad thing?
Considering the size, it doesn't feel as heavy as you think it should, even though there is actually only 5g difference in weight between the Canon - 1,380g and the Fuji - 1,375g. (Weights taken from manufacturers specs.) With an X-T1 on the back it feels very well balanced, and easily hand holdable for extended periods. There is also a tripod/monopod mount on the lens for extra stability and to take the weight.
We have come to expect superb quality from the XF Fuji lenses, and this lens does not disappoint! Super sharp and fast to focus. The results out of the X cameras and this lens are just superb.
It is also compatible with the 1.4x giving you an effective focal length (with 1.5x crop) of 210-840mm f6.3-8
Fuji CSC used for Sports Photography?
A few Professional Fuji X-Photographers have been testing the lens out at a motor sports event, and have been getting astonishing results that are more than comparable to full sized DSLR's!

Yes it is big. No its not the lightest lens Fuji have ever made.
But, it is stunning quality and the Zoom range is perfect for Sports and Wildlife Photographers using the Fuji X system cameras.
It's probably not suited to the average holiday maker looking for a lightweight kit to take away with them but that being said, we can not think of a single lens that goes to 400mm that would be considered a small, lightweight travel lens!
